The Client

Pullen Painters is a woman-owned, family-run painting company based in McHenry, Illinois. They’ve been serving McHenry, Lake, and Kane County for over 15 years — residential, commercial, interior, exterior. Five-star Google reviews. Repeat customers. A crew that shows up when they say they will and cleans up when they leave. In short: a company that had earned a strong reputation and was ready to look like it.

The Problem

The original logo was built by the owners themselves. That matters — there’s real pride in creating something for your own business, and it’s worth respecting. But pride doesn’t solve the practical problems a logo has to solve.

The gray square mark had no color, which is a strange choice for a painting company. The outlined type caused reproduction headaches across every medium — it looked different on white, on black, on colored backgrounds, and on dark van wraps. At small sizes, the outlines filled in. At large sizes, they looked thin and unfinished. The mark as a whole read as dated and DIY, which was the opposite of the professional impression Pullen Painters had earned job by job over 15 years.

They weren’t even sure they wanted a new logo. They’d made the original themselves and were attached to it. The hesitation was real and understandable. The goal wasn’t to talk them into something new — it was to help them see what a technically sound, versatile identity system could actually do for them at every touchpoint.

The Strategy

The design brief was practical before it was aesthetic. The logo needed to work on yard signs, vehicle wraps, hats, shirts, and the web — which means it had to hold up in full color, in one color, reversed white on black, and stamped black on white. A logo that needs to be redesigned every time the format changes isn’t a logo system, it’s a liability.

The concept centered on two ideas: the double-P initials as a visual device, and paint color chips as the structural metaphor. The result is the quadrant mark — four rounded forms locked in a 2×2 grid that reads as “PP” at a glance and as color swatches at a second glance. There’s no black in the mark itself. The outline visible in light-background versions is simply transparency — swap the type to white and it works equally well on dark.

Color was deliberately un-obvious. Most painting companies reach for bright primaries. This palette went earthy — teal, coral, sage green, warm sand. Colors you’d actually see inside a well-painted home, not on a hardware store sign. The typeface, built from Bagram and adjusted by hand, adds just enough roundness and warmth to match the family’s personality without dating itself.

The process involved rounds of internal sketching and elimination before a single concept was ever presented to the client. When a client is hesitant going in, showing them three rough directions creates doubt and invites second-guessing. The stronger move is doing the work until there’s one answer that’s clearly right — then presenting that with confidence. Pullen Painters saw one version of the logo, and that was the one they launched with.
